Understanding the Impact of Trauma

Trauma isn't always the result of one overwhelming event. Sometimes it develops through repeated experiences that leave you feeling unsafe, powerless, or unable to trust the people around you. These experiences may include:

  • Growing up with emotionally unavailable or mentally ill parents
  • Enduring physical or emotional abuse
  • Living in an unstable home
  • Witnessing abuse
  • Suffering from religious trauma
  • Enduring extreme bullying
  • Going through high-conflict divorces

Understanding how trauma has affected you is an important part of healing. Many people struggle to recognize their experiences as trauma or continue to carry blame and shame for things that were never theirs to carry. Trauma therapy provides a safe place to begin understanding these patterns, rebuilding trust, and healing without judgment.

Have any questions about Trauma Therapy? Let’s connect.

Trauma affects everyone differently

Trauma causes a wide range of symptoms that can affect individuals differently based on their personal experiences. Some causes for trauma can include, but are not limited to:

  • Childhood relationships with caregivers that are unpredictable and frightening.

  • Repeated experiences of neglect or abuse

  • Exposure to domestic violence or violence in general

  • Being raised by or in a relationship with an active addict or mentally ill person

  • Social stressors such as bullying, disability, or discrimination

Many people may feel hopeless and uncertain about their mental health. They might experience distressing memories, nightmares, avoidance, hyperarousal (always being on guard), or negative beliefs about themselves and the world.

Being constantly alert can lead to sleep disturbances and difficulties with daily tasks, which may further exacerbate feelings of self-blame. Additionally, trauma can cause trust issues that make it hard to form meaningful relationships. People who’ve been hurt in past relationships may be afraid to pursue new connections for fear that the past will repeat itself.

None of this is the fault of trauma survivors, despite the cultural messages that they may internalize. Removing the feelings of shame and self-blame is crucial for a successful recovery since it can lead to better self-esteem and more confidence.

Trauma therapy can reestablish hope for the future

Healing from trauma takes time, and you should never feel pressured to move faster than you are ready for. We will help you understand how your past experiences may still be affecting the way you think, feel, react, and connect with others today. Together, we can begin working through the pain, letting go of shame and self-blame, and helping you feel safer and more in control of your life. The goal is not to erase what happened, but to help you reach a place where the past no longer has the same power over your present or your future.

Every experience with trauma is different. What happened, when it happened, and how you learned to cope with it all matter. Having a therapist you feel safe with is an important part of healing. We will take the time to build that trust while helping you process what happened, understand the patterns that developed because of it, and begin moving forward without allowing the past to define your future.
